Catching Up

We left Sangudo (and the tractor parade) and headed for Dawson Creek in British Columbia, Canada.  It was an uneventful drive if you don’t count all the dips in the road.  I guess that’s the opposite of the frost heaves we’ll encounter in Alaska.  We thought we were going to stay 3 days in Dawson Creek but when we got there we found out there’s really nothing to do there.  We took the obligatory pictures of “Mile 0” of the Alaska Highway.  This is where it officially starts.  It was constructed during World War II and ends at Delta Junction, Alaska at mile 1422.  It’s also considered to be part of the Pan American Highway which ends in Argentina but that’s not official.

We left early this morning at a little after 9:00.  WAY early for us but we had a 300 mile drive today to Ft Nelson.  Not exactly the way I wanted to spend my birthday but it WAS a beautiful drive.  We were also on the hunt for wildlife.  For about 200 miles all we saw was a deer and then we saw a dead moose on the side of the road.  That was sad to see.  There are warnings all along the highway about being careful not to hit wildlife.

Then we FINALLY saw a bear on the side of the road!!!  He paid no attention to us and it was obvious he was VERY hungry.

We made it FINALLY to Fort Nelson where we’ll stay for the night and head out tomorrow for Liard River.

   We were thinking about going all the way to Watson Lake but decided we didn’t want another 300 plus mile trip two days in a row.  We’ve also heard the roads get worse from here on out.
